Can a curling iron be used as a straightener?

I tried using a curling iron, just to see what it would do, and it straightened my hair when I just ran my hair through the curling iron? Is this supposed to work? Will this give me the same results as a straightener? I straightened my hair a while ago and I'm pretty sure it had the exact same effect. Ultimately, do I need to buy a straightener, or will this do?

a curling iron can be used as a straightener in a pinch, but from experience it dries out your hair, and causes split ends some times and because of the way it is made it may sometime leave creases in your hair. Get a flat iron , but start on a low setting to try it out first. I didn't do that and burned hair is a smell that sticks around a while
