i had exactly the same thoughts, smuggly using my far cheaper ceramic straighteners, until i went on holiday with a friend and borrowed hers! They truly are amazing. Because they are hotter and smoother than most other ones, less work is required to straighten your hair and they make your hair silky smooth!
Earlier models did have a slight burning out problem (or just plain old catching on fire!), but the newest model has a cut out timer. Well worth the ridiculous expense!

omg, they r like the best straighteners ever, they are the only ones that truly work and your hair stays beautiful all day. it says it all in the name ghd with them you will always have a good hair day!

they are over-rated! there are much better straighteners around and most people find that GHD's have a lot of technical problems and can burn out easily. i prefer my morphy richards :-)
