Why are they called "a PAIR of hair straighteners" when there's only one?!?

In general, any tool made of two hinged parts is called a pair, even after they are put together. Hence pliers, scissors, calipers etc. (The name used in Sheffield, where scissors were traditionally made, for the person who puts together the two halves of a pair of scissors is a "puttertogetherer")

There is one interesting exception to this rule: "forceps". It is confusing. It looks like a plural because it ends in an "s", but that is because it comes straight from Latin. It is wrong to talk about "a pair of forceps". If you have two of these tools, you should say "a pair of forcipes"
